Traveline Cymru has expanded the range of information it provides to the Welsh travelling public with the launch of a fare finder service.
Public transport users can now access rail and bus fares from a range of operators through Traveline Cymru’s dedicated bilingual call centre and website, and in coming weeks its iphone and android apps.
Traveline Cymru is one of the first Traveline region in the UK to attempt to deliver fares via its information platforms following market research, customer satisfaction surveys and ongoing customer feedback confirmed that when planning a journey the number one piece of information traveller’s need is how much that journey is going to cost them.
The improved service was officially launched by the Welsh Government’s Transport Minister Edwina Hart and Traveline Cymru’s ambassador, TV presenter Iolo Williams at the University of South Wales’ City Campus in Newport.
At the launch, Transport Minister, Edwina Hart, said: “I am pleased to be able to launch this new Traveline Cymru service today. Being able to access timetable and fare information from one place will make using public transport easier and more convenient. The Welsh Government is supporting projects like this to encourage more use of public transport to improve access to jobs and services and reduce reliance on the car.”
This is the latest improvement made by Traveline Cymru, which earlier this year reported record figures for the first half of 2013 with almost 2 million pieces of travel information delivered to Welsh travellers via its information platforms. Up 49% on last year, Traveline Cymru has seen the greatest demand come from travellers seeking information on the go with a 136% growth in information delivered via its mobile app and text service.
Graham Walter, General Manager for Traveline Cymru, said: “In 2010, after listening to what the Welsh travelling public needed when planning a journey we took the decision to embark on a major project to collate all the data necessary to deliver fares information to our customers.
“Dedicated resource was deployed to collate and process data from bus and rail operators and we have enhanced our website and call centre software to disseminate the information to the travelling public.
“This has been a time consuming, labour intensive and technically challenging project however the results make it worthwhile and we are pleased to launch the fare finder service, further helping our customers from across Wales access public transport information more effectively.
“At present fare information is available from all the main operators, covering the majority of passenger journeys in Wales. Phase two is to work with the smaller operators to get their information into the system finally offering all Wales coverage.”
