Asalus Medical Instruments’ revolutionary new product Ultravision has won three prestigious awards in the space of a week.
Ultravision was awarded a nationwide prize at the Praxis Unico Impact Awards, as well as both the New Ventures and inaugural ‘People’s Choice’ Awards at this year’s Cardiff University Innovation and Impact Awards.
The ground-breaking invention, which clears smoke created by cutting instruments during laparoscopic surgery, was conceived by Dr Warren, a specialist at the forefront of minimally invasive surgery training at Cardiff University.
Ultravision took home the Business Impact (Aspiring) award from PraxisUnico at the glittering awards ceremony held this year in the National Museum, Cardiff.
The UK-wide Impact Awards recognise and celebrate the success of collaborative working and the process of innovation in higher education, charities and public sector research establishments for the wider benefit of society and the economy. The award recognised the Cardiff University team that identified and initiated the early-stage development of Ultravision.
The awards completed a quartet of honours for Ultravision in 2014, having been awarded the Royal College of Surgeons Cutlers’ Surgical Prize earlier in the year.
Ultravision is the first product to be launched by Asalus, the company established to commercialise the inventions of the Welsh Institute of Minimal Access Therapy (WIMAT). After securing a CE mark at the beginning of the year, it is currently being launched across Europe through a network of exclusive distributors.
Commenting on the award Dominic Griffiths, Managing Director of Asalus Medical Instruments said, “The Ultravision story has been an excellent example of best practice collaborative IP commercialisation. Cardiff University immediately recognised the potential value, rapidly filed IP and provided translational funding to create prototypes. The commercialisation team then secured funding from Fusion IP, Finance Wales and IP Group to create Asalus. Four years later we have a launched product and are attracting distribution partners worldwide. The overwhelming interest we are receiving from the surgical community and global distributors makes the years of hard work all worthwhile.“
